Introduction to OpenFOAM® Computational Library and Viscoelastic Fluid Flow Simulation

This course is crafted to acquaint participants with the foundational principles and diverse applications of OpenFOAM—a versatile open-source computational library. The course aims to be a comprehensive entry point for individuals seeking to learn how to use OpenFOAM in simulating different phenomena across diverse engineering fields.

The course curriculum offers hands-on immersion into OpenFOAM’s functionalities. Participants will learn how to deal with essential concepts covering geometry and mesh generation, numerical discretization, case study setup, post-processing, and the intricacies of simulating within the OpenFOAM environment.

Through interactive sessions, attendees will navigate the construction of computational models, mastering the library’s tools via step-by-step tutorials. Manipulating geometries, mesh generation, defining simulation parameters, and interpreting results will form the core of the practical exercises, ensuring proficiency in utilizing OpenFOAM’s capabilities.

Furthermore, the course incorporates an introduction to tools tailored for modeling the flow of viscoelastic fluids within the OpenFOAM framework, resonating with the audience of the Polymer Processing Society Conferences.

Targeting industrialists, researchers, and students across proficiency levels in computational modeling, this course aims to empower participants in leveraging OpenFOAM as a powerful simulation tool. By course completion, attendees will possess a foundational comprehension of OpenFOAM’s scope and the practical skills indispensable for independently initiating and conducting simulations.

About the Instructors

João Miguel Amorim Novais Costa Nóbrega

IPC – Institute for Polymers and Composites, Polymer Engineering Department, University of Minho

J. Miguel Nóbrega is an Associate Professor at the Polymer Engineering Department within the University of Minho and member of the Institute for Polymers and Composites.

His PhD in Polymer Science and Engineering from the University of Minho was concluded in 2004. Distinguished as the leader in Digital Transformation in Manufacturing for the MIT Portugal program, he is also the editor of OpenFOAM Wiki and the OpenFOAM Journal, a founding member of the Iberian OpenFOAM Technology Users, and integrates the OpenFOAM Workshop Committee. His research focuses on three interwoven domains: product development, polymer processing, and material rheology. His expertise lies in developing computational rheology tools, instrumental in modeling the behavior of complex materials in diverse manufacturing processes. His contributions extend to diverse fields such as health, textiles, sensoring/monitoring, construction, and mobility, where he actively engages in product design and manufacturing. Utilizing the open-source computational library OpenFOAM as a foundational element for numerical developments, he often resorts to simulation to support decision-making processes in industrial design and manufacturing.

Mohammadreza Aali

IPPD – Institute for Polymer Processing and Digital Transformation, Johannes Kepler University of Linz (JKU)

Mohammadreza Aali is a university lecturer and senior project scientist at the Institute for Polymer Processing and Digital Transformation (IPPD) at Johannes Kepler University of Linz (JKU).

He obtained his Ph.D. in Engineering and Science of Polymers and Composites from the University of Minho in 2022, he embarked on a journey centered around computational rheology, leveraging both experimental and numerical methods. Concurrently, he serves as a university lecturer, imparting knowledge to students on various aspects of polymer science. Transitioning to the role of a Senior Project Scientist, he deepen his focus on computational modeling. Here, he strives to integrate advanced numerical techniques into polymer processing, contributing to more sustainable and efficient manufacturing practices. Additionally, he is a proud member of the Polymer Processing Society since 2019, where he actively engages in collaborative efforts to further advance the field.
